iPod Bookmarks

Kudos to Brother Baz for this email he sent today:

Hi all

iPod normally forgets where you pause/stop your music.

If you rename a non-protected aac file (normal extension is .m4a) to .m4b then the ipod will add a bookmark to each file remembering where you last paused the music. This doesn't work for mp3 files - convert to aac first.

This is a solution to two problems that I've had with my ipod, it allows you to :

1. Listen to an entire album with no track breaks, but retain your position in the album when the ipod restarts after a reboot, or if you want to listen to something else. To do this use itunes to combine all the tracks from the album into one file, and then rename as .m4b.

2. Audio books typically contain hundreds of files - so it's difficult to know which track you've got to as well as the location in the track that you've reached once the ipod has lost it's place. Combining all tracks together and renaming to .m4b should fix this.

And here's an AppleScript to do all the hard work for you on a Mac.

Another recent discovery of mine, which you might find useful is www.tinyurl.com. Its great for sending huge links to people in emails or for posting on websites, and is proper Ronseal.
